Vehicle-to-Field
Communication is the communication between a vehicle, whether it is a
personal vehicle or a transit bus, and a field device such as a signal
system or traffic monitoring station. In the Bay Area, there are two
main types of Vehicle-to-Field deployments. Both are in their
infancy as far as ITS standards application and deployment. The first,
Connected Vehicles, is an emerging use of personal vehicles or vehicle
probes to communicate with roadside field devices to warn drivers of
possible hazards or to communicate traffic conditions. The second,
Location Referencing Message Specification (LRMS) communicates the
location of a vehicle in a standardized message to a center or to
the field. One common application for LRMS is in transit Automatic
Vehicle Location (AVL) projects.
