Standards for transit services
were identified as a strong need in the Bay Area. During the
stakeholder outreach for the Bay Area ITS Architecture, many
stakeholders expressed the need for transit ITS standards to aid
integration of projects and to facilitate future equipment procurement.
The intent is not to standardize the individual systems themselves, but
to develop a standard methodology for sharing vehicle location and
other pertinent transit ITS data.
There is a suite of transit ITS
standards that are in varying states of development, approval and
update under the NTCIP umbrella.
Information on the complete set of standards (transit and non-transit)
can be found on the NTCIP website: http://www.ntcip.org/. The standards
for Transit Communications Interface Profiles (TCIP) can be used for:
- Passenger Information
- Transit Signal Priority
- Automatic Vehicle Location
- Computer Aided Dispatch
- Scheduling
- Various on-board systems (e.g.
Fare Collection)
