Caption: This is the manufacturing of suspension bridge saddles to be used in the massive construction project to retrofit and replace the entire eight-mile San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. This saddle work took place at the Japan Steel Works in Muroran, Japan. Seen here is the casting phase in which the 150 ton “West Jacking Saddle” was hoisted out of casting sand and moved by crane to the opposite end of the foundry so the remaining sand could be removed.
