| 101 – BART Last week, I was given the opportunity to witness a baseball game of dynamite defense as the A’s beat the Mariners 2-0. Of course, I was there on assignment, writing a story on the BART Rider of the game Melissa Wong. You can read all about her and her exuberant, personable nature here. She even gave me some nuts. You might be inclined to think that the game was boring because virtually no one scored or got on base. Nonetheless, their was some great pitching and I got to use my press pass to plant myself right behind home plate. The perks of this job are becoming more and more tangible as I ride BART for free and get to go to events like this. The legwork required to follow up on stories and the back and forth editing can be tedious, but all in all, it’s pretty engaging work. Plus, I got to hug a big furry elephant.
Stefan Martinez says: My first week at BART thrust me into whirlwind of activity and utter excitement, and sheer WORD that is the BART website world. I witnessed my supervisor spring to action to handle sensitive issues regarding the BART world as they arose, including the unfortunate incidences involving people to train collision, and the settlement reached between Oscar Grant’s mother and BART. That is not to say, however, that I was left in the lurch, my supervisor took me under her wing like a mothering Hen, and showed me what I would need to know over the course of the week. With this meticulous, insightful, and all together inspiring instruction, I was afforded a great deal of independence. I got to publish an article on an BART bike survey, conduct four interviews, and even attend a press release thereupon I not only pilfered their upon buffet of hors d’oeuvres but got to conduct an additional spur of the moment interview with the chief curator of natural sciences while my supervisor was called back to work for Urgent matters. I got to spend a lot of time out in field, and a lot of time writing which made for an intellectually stimulating and otherwise exiting real experience in the work place that I hope I will continue to find in the rest of my professional endeavors. http://www.bart.gov/news/articles/2011/news20110628a.aspx 102 – Caltrans

110 – City of San Leandro Morgan Wilson’s Mentor, Reh-Lin Chen says (7/19/11): We were extremely busy last week as Morgan assisted me in two critical tasks. One was our two Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Grant applications that were due July 15, and the other is the Union Bank Parking Survey and Analysis. Morgan assisted me in doing some online data entry for the SRTS applications. Additionally, Morgan made a hand drawing of a hypothetical street and parking layout that looks pretty good from a high school intern. Morgan Wilson’s Mentor, Reh-Lin Chen says: Morgan’s 2nd week has been great as well. He works between 8:30 am and 5 pm daily, including an one-hour lunch break. The primary task he has done is to conduct the speed survey and establish the speed limit of a street segment based on his collected speed data. See attached photos of the speed survey in the field. He also attended a few meetings with City staff, including meetings with AC Transit for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project and with McDonald’s Restaurant for a redevelopment project. He also assisted our Engineering Aide Victor Lemmon in conducting traffic related field checks to either address Citizens’ inquires or fulfill data requirements of numerous on-going traffic improvement projects. Overall, Morgan is upbeat and continue to widen his horizon in the municipal transportation engineering functions.
Morgan Wilson’s Mentor, Reh-Lin Chin says: Morgan learned something on the Citywide Collision Database. He also helped us conduct an off-street parking survey in a parking lot which serves a bank. Morgan also enjoyed a Pizza Lunch today when he joined a few other colleagues and high school interns for an orientation at the San Leandro Engineering and Transportation Department.
113 – City of El Cerrito Intern Jose Ledesma says (7/19/11): I have been so busy learning about a lot of useful stuff. They have been keeping me busy working in the office and also doing field work. In the office I have been learning what TRs (Traffic Requests) are. It is interesting the way people submit them and then whether the engineers approve it or not. I have also been preparing DTOs (Detailed Traffic Orders) which is the approved TR that gets submitted to the maintenance department. Once the TR is approved, we go out and check the site and take some pictures. In the DTO there is a detailed picture showing what needs to be fixed and a description describing what needs to be done. Today, I was out in the Field striping the parking lot spaces at the El Cerrito swim center. It came out really nice.
